Terms of service
What you can expect from this site, what we ask of you in return, and — the part that matters most — what an estimate can and cannot tell you. Using the site means accepting these terms.
Who we are
Home Energy Planner is operated by Rabbits Foot Limited, a company registered in England and Wales (company number TODO), whose registered office is at TODO. In these terms “we” means that company and “you” means whoever is using the site.
We are an independent site. We are not a government body, we are not affiliated with any department or scheme administrator, and nothing here is a government service or an application for one. Reach us at richard@rabbitsfoot.co.uk.
What the service does
You tell us about your home and we estimate which energy improvements are likely to be worth considering for it, roughly what they might save, and what support may be available. It is free, it needs no account, and you can stop at any point.
Every figure we show comes from a published source with a date attached, and how we work out our estimates sets out where each one comes from and what it can support.
What it is not
This is the section to read twice, because most complaints about tools like this one come from mistaking an estimate for a promise.
- Not a survey. We have never seen your home. Only an installer’s heat loss survey can tell you whether a particular system suits it.
- Not a quote. What the work costs is decided by the quotes you are given, not by us. Where we cannot stand behind a price, we do not print one.
- Not a guarantee of savings. Our savings come from measured outcomes across many households, and in that data more than a quarter used more energy after some measures, not less. Your home is one household, not an average.
- Not advice. Nothing here is financial, legal, tax or professional advice, and it is not a recommendation to enter into any particular contract.
- Not an eligibility decision. Whether you actually get a grant is decided by whoever runs that scheme, against their criteria on the day, and not by us.
Figures change, and some go out of date
Energy prices move, grants close, and schemes are replaced. We check our figures against their sources and show you when each was last verified, but we cannot promise that every one is current at the moment you read it. Check anything that matters to a decision against the scheme’s own published rules before you rely on it.
If you find a figure you believe is wrong, tell us. Getting one corrected is more useful to us than being right about the rest.
Your side of it
- Give us answers that are accurate as far as you know. “I am not sure” is a real answer here and a better one than a guess — the result says how confident it is.
- Ask about a home you own or live in, and do not submit someone else’s contact details as your own.
- Treat the output as a starting point. Get two or three quotes and take professional advice before committing to work.
- Be 18 or over. This service is not designed for children.
Installers and quote requests
If you ask for a quote, we pass your details to one installer for the improvement you asked about, and only because you ticked a box saying we may. That is an introduction and nothing more.
Any contract for work is between you and that company. We are not a party to it, we do not supply, supervise or inspect the work, and we are not responsible for what they quote, how they behave or what they install. Your rights in that contract are against them. If they fall short, take it up with them and with whichever body certified them — and please also tell us, because it decides whether we keep working with them.
How we are paid
We may earn a commission when someone finds an installer through this site. It never changes what you pay, and it cannot change what we recommend or the order we recommend it in: how we rank recommendations explains why, and how we make money sets out what we will and will not do for money.
Using the site fairly
Please do not:
- Submit assessments or quote requests automatically, in bulk, or with details that are not yours to give.
- Try to get around our rate limits, or to interfere with, probe or overload the service.
- Scrape the site wholesale, or republish our content as though it were your own.
- Present the site, or anything from it, as an official or government source.
We rate-limit requests and may block traffic that breaks these terms. Ordinary use will never come near those limits.
Content and links
The words, design and software on this site belong to us. You are welcome to read it, print it, quote it with attribution and link to any page — link freely, we would rather you did that than copy it. The public datasets behind our figures carry their own licences, and we credit each source where it is used.
Where we link out, we do not control what is on the other end and are not responsible for it.
Availability
We do not promise the site will always be available or free of faults. We may change, pause or withdraw any part of it, and we may change these terms — the date at the bottom tells you when they last moved, and continuing to use the site after a change means accepting it.
Our liability
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected by anything here.
Beyond that, and to the extent the law allows: the site is provided as it is, for general information; we are not liable for any loss arising from a decision you make on the strength of an estimate, from a figure that has changed since we checked it, from work carried out by an installer, or from the site being unavailable. We are not liable for business losses, since this service is for people making decisions about their own homes.
Your information
What we collect and what happens to it is set out in our privacy policy, which forms part of these terms.
Which law applies
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and disputes may be brought in its courts. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland you may also bring proceedings where you live.
